October Squash report

The winter squash season is now well and truly under way, easy to spot due to a sudden surge in demand for court time. Now that the men`s teams and ladies team have started their fixtures there is further pressure on courts at peak periods. I am in the process of looking at the viability of running a men`s 3rd. team, due to the fact that we now have a squad of over 30 squash members who wish to play for the club teams. The squad has been considerably strengthened by the addition of a number of strong players, which means that the bottom half of the squad are rarely selected to play. In order to facilitate the raising of a 3rd. team without it having an impact on court availability, I and JP are exploring the possibility of using Warwick school squash courts for our home matches, all subject to negotiation with Warwick school, and also to sound out are near neighboring clubs as to their interest. Andy Campbell, who has kindly agreed to see the new heating boiler project through to completion, has been pressing Eco energy Solutions for a timetable for the installation, it appears they are ready to go ahead shortly, we need them to confirm how long it will take and what disruption it might cause. It may mean the closure of the courts during the daytime while work is being carried out, we await EcoEnergy to come back to us on this point. The Autumn Team competition is now under way, with all the usual gliches cropping up, but nevertheless it seems to be working and provides an enjoyable, but no too serious evening of squash and racketball competition. Thanks are due to Jonathan Partridge for his usual meticulous organization. Finally, I would like to offer, on behalf of the General Committee, our thanks to Andy Campbell for three years of hard graft in the running of the squash section as its squash captain. The baton has now been handed on to me, thank God Andy is still on hand to answer my endless queries. Andy has decided to step back from all involvement after the completion of the heating boiler installation, he deserves a well earned rest and the time to enjoy his squash playing.
